North Carolina Military Kids Learn About Afghanistan

Posted on June 20th, 2011, by jhunter

On April 9, Military Families United and our Camp Desert Kids program visited families at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in Havelock, NC. 173 military children attended the event to learn about the Afghan people and culture. As children of deployed or soon-to-deploy servicemembers, Camp Desert Kids enabled these children to better understand where their parent will be serving. Families tried the local food, learned about geography and customs, tried on Afghan clothing and accessories, and even experienced the Afghan voting process. Watch a video of the event on our YouTube site.

With the help of Marine Corps Family Team Building, the 4th Military Information Support Group from Fort Bragg, and Marine volunteers, Military Families United helped reduce the unknown in our military children's lives through this exciting program.

MFU at the White HouseRepresentatives from Military Families United joined First Lady Michelle Obama for a Monther's Day Tea at the White House on May 6. The event was part of Joining Forces, a new initiative led by Mrs. Obama and Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden that "mobilizes all sectors of society to give our servicemembers and their families the opportunities and support they deserve."

At the invitation of the White House, Military Families United also attended the official introduction ceremony in the East Room on April 12. Joining Forces will focus on three main issues of importance to military families: employment, education and wellness. We were honored to be asked to be involved in the initiative and we hope to continue to team with the White House and other military friendly businesses, corporations and organizations to give back to those families who have sacrificed so much. We strongly support the Joining Forces motto, "Everyone Can Do Something." To learn more, visit the the Joining Forces website.
