On Tuesday, September 11, 2001 the War on Terror was brought to our shores. On that fateful day America was attacked and we lost family and friends. We will never forget that day, nor should we, but we should also remember the words of our friend and colleague Commander Kirk Lippold "before 9/11 there was 10/12." On Thursday, October 12, 2000 while refueling in the Port of Aden, Yemen terrorists attacked the USS Cole. On that fateful day far less Americans gave their lives than the thousands on 9/11, but the sacrifice of the 17 sailors, their families, and the entire crew of the Cole must always be honored and remembered. On that fateful day Commander Lippold and his crew jumped into action to save their ship and their shipmates lives. When face-to-face with the War on Terror the brave Americans on USS Cole did what we’ve always done, answered the call and fought for freedom.
We urge on this day, the 11th anniversary of the attack on USS Cole, that you take time to remember the 17 sailors who were killed and their families. Take time to remember sailors like Craig Wibberley, a bright young man whose knowledge of computers and technology would have taken him far in the Navy. Take time to think about his father Tom who himself was a Veteran and proud of his son for following in his footsteps to serve his country. Take time to remember that before 9/11 there was 10/12.
